Robben Island Preserving What Matters: Value-Led Planning for Cultural Heritage Sites

Robben Island, near Cape Town, South Africa. Although best known as the former site of a maximum security prison for anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, Robben Island is also a significant wildlife habitat, home to over 70 species of birds, including African penguins that have recently reestablished breeding on the island. The challenge for conservation professionals lies in managing the site in a way that addresses equally the island's natural and cultural values. Photo: AFP Photo/Cape Argus.
