A series of grants supported the conservation of the late 16th century Scala Santa, the building that houses the ancient marble staircase by tradition held to be the steps Christ ascended to receive his judgment by Pontius Pilate. Getty grants made possible the conservation of Paul Brill's fresco cycle in the San Silvestro Chapel, which receives nearly two million visitors annually, and a comprehensive publication on the research and treatment of these significant paintings.
