The terrain of Los Angeles is overlaid with dynamic musical maps. The city's unique history, diversity, hybridity, and rapid urban growth have created an incredibly rich soundtrack.

Sonic Overdrive—a special one-night performance of songs and stories—explores this city's eclectic sonic environment, from punk to gospel and cumbia to hip hop, rock, Norteño, and country. Hosted by music critic, scholar, and curator Josh Kun, the evening's lineup offers a journey through musical geographies from East L.A. to Malibu.

Sonic Overdrive includes performances by:

Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers)

Exene Cervenka (X, The Knitters)

Underground hip-hop veteran Busdriver

Latin fusion band La Santa Cecilia

Soul-and-gospel legend Merry Clayton (whose background vocals helped define songs by Neil Young, Carole King, and the Rolling Stones)

Alternative-rock favorites Silversun Pickups

Presented as part of the exhibition Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future 1940–1990.

Also presented with the Getty Research Institute's symposium Urban Ambition: Assessing the Evolution of L.A. The two-day event is open to the public. For more information and reservations, click the link.
