Getty Begins New Weekend Evening Hours

Getty Center Now Open Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m.

September 28, 2001

Los Angeles--The Getty Center has expanded its weekend hours and is now open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. As before, no parking reservations are needed on weekends, after 4 p.m. on weekdays, or for college students with a current school I.D., so spontaneous, drop-in visits are encouraged. Admission to the Getty is free. Parking is $5 per car.

"Los Angeles now offers one more fabulous evening destination. The Getty at night is not to be missed," comments Andrea Leonard, head of Getty Visitor Services. "Imagine the sunset reflecting on the architecture and a soft ocean breeze while you and your companion enjoy dinner and world-class art--and admission is free. What a great way to spend Friday or Saturday evening."

The Getty's new hours are: Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Getty is closed Mondays and major holidays. Formerly, the Getty was open on Tuesday and Wednesday until 7 p.m. and on Thursday until 9 p.m.

Advance parking reservations are still required on weekdays before 4 p.m. and for groups. The Getty also recently introduced a popular free parking and shuttle service available from a nearby lot at Constitution Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard. Reservations are not needed to use the shuttle.

The Getty Center invites visitors to enjoy art, architecture, fine dining, flourishing gardens, and spectacular views. Visitors can enjoy another new Getty amenity--on Fridays and Saturdays from now through October, the Restaurant at the Getty is offering beverage service on the terrace from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Overlooking the Santa Monica mountains and the ocean beyond, the Restaurant is open for dining on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 to 9 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Visitors may also eat at the Cafe, which is open during the evenings until 8:30 p.m., or bring their own picnic dinners to enjoy on the grounds. To make parking and dinner reservations and to find out more about the Getty call 310-440-7300 or visit

In addition to its permanent collection galleries, the Getty Museum features a wide variety of special exhibitions. Since opening in December 1997, the Getty Center has welcomed over five million visitors.
