2005 MUSEUM LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE At the Getty Center, July 9-29, 2005

LOS ANGELES—The Getty’s Museum Leadership Institute (MLI), the leading professional development program for decision makers in the museum field, will convene at the Getty Center from July 9–29, 2005. This year, the intensive three-week course, which emphasizes collaboration and team learning, will draw 32 leaders from museums around the world, including the Australian War Memorial in Canberra; the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa; the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, U.K.; the National Museum of African Art, the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the Brooklyn Children's Museum, New York; and Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles, CA.

Offered by the Getty since 1984, the MLI (formerly known as the MMI, or Museum Management Institute) is the primary executive development opportunity of the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI).  A program of the Getty Foundation, the GLI plays a crucial role in keeping museums and their leaders up-to-date on the most pressing issues. Its MLI course has been the leading educational forum for museum directors and executives for the past 26 years. Participants come to MLI to enhance their leadership skills in order to strengthen their institutions and operate more effectively in an increasingly complex environment. Coursework includes strategic thinking, finance, negotiation, marketing, and organizational behavior. The MLI’s outstanding body of alumni—over 900 museum professionals from the United States and more than 20 countries—is responsible for setting directions that shape the cultural map. 

In today’s fast-changing world, MLI equips museum directors and executives with the skills necessary to respond to new challenges, addressing topics such as building public understanding, achieving financial stability, leading organizational change, and enhancing staff and board effectiveness. Faculty members are drawn from the top ranks of institutions offering executive education, including Dartmouth College, Duke University, Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of Virginia. Case studies and exercises designed specifically for MLI combine current events and trends with academic theory and best practices. Some of these cases have been incorporated into business school curricula at Harvard and Virginia. 

In addition to the MLI, the Getty Leadership Institute also offers a portfolio of other professional development programs designed for administrators, curators, board members, and a variety of other museum-related roles.
